Dr. Kat's Background

Dr. Kat Carrick is a social worker, activist, and educator. For over 30 years, she has been involved in both clinical and community social work across the service line including grassroots activism, community mental health, foster care, inpatient psychiatric, private practice, hospice care, domestic violence, trauma and PTSD, hospital administration, and academia.

Her passion is teaching health care professionals how to provide more culturally responsive care to the LGBTQIA+ community. She is a featured author in Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health, recognized as one of "10 LGBTQ Books to Watch out for in 2020" by NBC News.

In addition to her work with Open Space CCW, Dr. Kat Carrick serves as core faculty for the LGBT Health, Policy & Practice Graduate Certificate Program in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences at George Washington University, where she developed the Rural Health and Lesbian Health course curriculum, supported program development, and established student scholarships with her grand writing skills. She is also an adjunct faculty member for the School of Social Work at Simmons University.

With a focus on community building, she serves nationally on the Peer-Review Committee for the annual conference for GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality. She also serves locally as a member of the Social Change Committee for the Three Rivers Community Foundation.

She earned her Doctorate in Social Work and Doctoral Certificate in Women, Gender and Sexuality from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master's in Clinical Social Work from Smith College, and a Bachelor's in Psychology from Chatham University.

 Dr. Kat's Approach

It goes without saying that Dr. Kat is a LGBTQIA+ and relationship minority affirming therapist, who works with folks across the lifespan. She has spent her entire career making courageous and genuine efforts to improve the health and well-being of the LGBTQIA+ community, and is undoubtedly a leader in both our local community and nationally. This natural energy and sincere passion for her work becomes very apparent the moment you meet her.

She is honest, creative and down-to-earth, which serves her well in her work with both adults and kids. Her background in education allows her to provide a unique, informed and well-rounded perspective. Kat enjoys working with individuals, parents and families to help them learn more effective ways to meet the mental health needs of their kids, learn more effective ways to meet THEIR OWN needs (that's important too! No, seriously!), and create the atmosphere they are striving for.

When she's not at Open Space CCW, you may also find her...
