Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
Karla completed her academic and clinical training at West Virginia University, and earned her Master's of Social Work degree with a focus on community mental health, substance abuse, and public policy. She's a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience in a wide range of settings.
Her most used framework with adults tends to be Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Reality therapy. With kids, play therapy is her choice therapeutic modality. She also draws upon Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Behavior Modification techniques, depending on what areas of concern are being presented. Karla will create a collaborative space where you can discuss your needs and your goals for treatment, and what modalities might work best for you.
Karla is really a kid at heart--which works well in her work with both adults and kids. She is open and honest, while also having a relaxed demeanor. She has an open-minded, strength-based approach because she truly wants to help folks get better. And when we feel comfortable, we tend to get better a little faster.
There's going to be a lot of laughter and Karla talking with her hands! If fidget items are your thing (adults and kids!), she can break those out too. She likes to provide a lot of education to help folks of all ages understand what's going on with themselves and the world around them, and how they can help. She will always be honest, yet always open-minded and non-judgmental.
With kids, Karla thrives on trying to understand them better and build connections through play therapy, where they can express their experiences in a more natural, self-guided way and gain some awareness of what's bothering them.
Parenting can also be ridiculously difficult. No one was handed a manual (but that would've been super helpful, right?)! She loves working with parents and families using a Family Systems approach to help them gain insight into their family dynamics, learn more effective ways to meet the needs of their kids, and create the atmosphere they are striving for.
When she's not at Open Space CCW, you may also find her...
